While many businesses are still looking to get their Windows Server 2012 estates (and previous OS’s – yes you’re not alone!) upgraded to Windows Server 2016 Microsoft has been busy working on readying the next version of Windows – Windows Server 2019.
You can try the new version using the Windows Insider program (you’ll need to sign up to this) and then download the software from here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windowsinsiderpreviewserver. I would highly recommend you get stuck in and start evaluating this OS. As you will see below Microsoft are focusing this OS for the hybrid cloud and will bring many benefits for businesses looking to start or enhance their cloud journey.
It’s important to note that there are two flavours of the Server 2019 trial that you can get – the LTSC (Long-Term Servicing Channel) Windows Server 2019 Build 17623 and the semi-annual. If you opt to try the LTSC flavour you will need to provide licence keys during the initial setup. These are:
Datacenter Edition 6XBNX-4JQGW-QX6QG-74P76-72V67
Standard Edition MFY9F-XBN2F-TYFMP-CCV49-RMYVH
Whichever you use though the build will expire on July 2nd 2018.
With Server 2019 Microsoft are focusing on four main areas (none of them are surprising) – Hybrid, Security, Application Platform, and Hyper-converged infrastructure. Server 2019 will also integrate tightly with Project Honolulu allowing customers to take advantage of many Microsoft Azure features (such as backup, file sync and DR) very quickly and easily. I’ll look at Project Honolulu and the new security features in more detail in later posts.
